Nathan says:

I’m of two minds about this one. On the one hand, it seems to be a little less adorned and colorful than most self-help books. On the other hand, the restrained design might actually exude confidence, which is especially good for the subject matter.

(I do know, though, that “will power” in the subtitle should be one word.)

  1. There is a lot of available space to allow for bigger title text that would be easier to read in thumbnail. There is also a lack of obvious focal point for the eye to grab onto, which I think causes it to register less well on first glance. Both situations might be improved by increasing the size of Peak by about 50-75%. Self-control is limited by image width (at least while hyphenated) but Peak has a lot of space to play with, and if enlarged would provide a point of focus just above the center of the page where cover graphics often put one.

    1. It’s a bit of a shame that “self-control” is a hyphenate. If it weren’t, I would strongly consider stacking the three words of the title, each one larger than the other, so that the peak is visual, as well as text. But I don’t care for the idea of “self-” (the hyphen) hanging out there by itself on the 2nd line.

The same issue would plague Willpower, were it to be used instead. Not great.

I’m with Nathan on this. There is something self-assured about the cover layout, but unless this author is a known, extant published author with other books about willpower (or other mental undertakings), or an acknowledged expert in the field, I think you need a bit more pizzazz.

I’m definitely in the “less is more” category for self-help and non-fiction books, but I think that this one’s less might be a bit too much LESS and not enough MORE.

  2. Just a little too little. There is really nothing beyond the title that suggests what this book is about…and absolutely nothing to attract the eye from any other books that might be around it. The title is almost unreadable at thumbnail size and the border adds absolutely nothing at all.

I would get rid of the block of color entirely and put the type directly over the image, making the title (and your name and the tagline) much larger at the same time.

  3. I agree with Ron. Take out the plain blue rectangle and do something fun with text. Even if you do partially outlined text with a cool graphic for peak. I like the background cover image. Color used properly makes connections with buyers based upon preconceived notions and learned from stimuli. Use color wisely. It can be your friend. I’d like to see a colored background with blue lettering with negative space used. It’s more interesting. Or try a graphic design or symbol that people can key into from a far when looking at it. Something cool. Like your colors though. Best of luck.
