Nathan says:

I really like all the elements; it’s a good cover. I especially like how the sky has gone from being simple negative space to an active design element.

If it were me, I’d play with rejiggering some of the spacing.  There doesn’t seem to be any reason for the title text to be slid to the left; it creates an odd margin over to the right that’s especially noticeable given the centering of the byline and the mirror positions of the children.

While I’m at it, I’d try moving the byline even further to the top, emphasizing the colorful sky as a deliberate design choice.

I’d also toy with moving the children further down into the snowfield rather than up touching the title.

  1. I agree with Nathan – the first thing I noticed was the TITLE. It should be centered more and the children staggered. My eye is drawn down, because of all the action at the bottom, so I skip over the author’s name. That could be a bit bigger, or really, placed at the bottom also, bringing everything up more. But I do like it and I really like the title and how it is canted.

    1. Yes. It seems unbalanced a bit. Plus, if I didn’t know the genre already, it would be difficult for me to guess that it’s a book of adventure essays.

  2. In general, I like it. I don’t know that it suggests Duluth to me–except for the massive pile of ice suggesting a nasty winter. It feels more arctic. When I think Duluth, I think homey middle-America. I thin I’d find a way to put the author’s name at the bottom. I love the title placement and style, but yes, centered would be better. I think the children are a bit small. they look like black “whatevers” on the thumbnail. I’d consider enlarging and reframing the photograph so they are a bit larger and there’s less ic below them.

  3. This is a really nice cover. My main objection is that the heads of the children are tangent with both the edge of the ice and the bottom edge of the title.
